The Bible is clear that God’s purpose is to glorify Himself and for us to glorify Him also! The Bible teaches this truth in many passages one of which is 2 Cor. 4:15. A paraphrase of that says, “We are doing all of this for you, so that more people will come to experience the grace of God through the gospel of Jesus Christ, which will result in more people giving heartfelt thanks to God, and glory increasing to a greater degree toward God, who is the primary object of our lives, sacrifice, and service.” There is a great deal of interest in the purpose of the church and the Christian life. We are thankful for the interest, but disappointed that some have missed the Biblical purpose for both the church and the Christian.
To glorify God means to magnify, praise, honor, and give fame and recognition to Him as the most supreme, wonderful, powerful, and merciful being. God as God deserves the center of attention. This is taught in almost every passage of the Bible, but is explicitly revealed in Psalm 86:8-13; 1 Cor. 10:31; Judges 7:2; Isaiah 42:8; and Jeremiah 9:23-24. The Westminster Catechism’s first question might be modernized to ask, “What is the primary purpose for man’s existence?” The answer they gave was, “To glorify God and enjoy him forever.” This is our purpose at Mineral Springs.
The functions of the church are the primary ways by which our congregation seeks to glorify God. We are striving as a congregation to follow the God given pattern set forth in the Bible by worshiping God as supreme, evangelizing the community, enjoying fellowship with one another, praying in humility, taking discipleship seriously, giving joyfully, and serving each other and the community effectively.
The success of Mineral Springs Church is not dependent upon a certain program or activity, but upon each of us recognizing our God given abilities and then putting those into practice in submission to Christ as our commander-in-chief.
It has been said, “When we depend upon organizations, we get what organizations can do; when we depend upon education, we get what education can do; when we depend upon man, we get what man can do; but when we depend upon God, we get what God can do.” Our philosophy at Mineral Springs is to grow more and more dependent on God. We believe that God is glorified when we stop striving to accomplish things that we are unable to do and trust Him to do His work.
We believe that our purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him. A passion for the glory of God and the exaltation of Jesus Christ is the church’s first concern if we are to please God. To have a growing church is good; to have a church full of pleased people may be desirable, but the church belongs to God, and the point of our existence is to please or glorify HIM! A healthy church will be an effective church and will be naturally reproducing. Mineral Springs desires to be a healthy church. A healthy church is one that has a passion for the glory of God at the forefront of all they are and do.
To accomplish this purpose we believe that preaching the gospel and praying with faith and waiting upon God are the primary activities that we should be involved in. Discipleship, evangelism and missions naturally grow out of these primary activities. In fact there can be no missionary vision without evangelistic zeal; there can be no evangelistic zeal without godliness and growth; there can be no godliness and growth without a genuine conversion experience; and there will be no significant lasting conversions to Christ without sound doctrine.
